“I learned that I was Jewish on several occasions. I learned that from the people in my street. Somebody told me: ‘You’re supposed to be Jewish, but you’re broke.’ I was a bit dumbfounded by this. I was hurt. By this laughter, you know. I had a friend, a Volksdeutscher, who said that I wasn’t a Volksdeutscher and we couldn’t be friends any longer.”
