Đorđe Balić
1951

Đorđe was born in Osijek and calls himself an Esseker. He worked for 48 years as a permanently appointed expert witness for civil engineering. In 1975, he climbed Mount Triglav and fell in love with mountaineering. He was President of the mountaineering society “Zanatlija” from Osijek, years-long Secretary of the Slavonian Mountaineering Association, and led Slavonia’s first mountaineering expedition to Mount Caucasus in 1990.
As early as 1984, I promised to write the chronicle of Slavonian mountaineering. Now, I have before me the great task of arranging these chronicles into books. I have a couple of alternatives, so now I’m tailoring them to match my health condition, my age, and everything else. I’m 75 years old, and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 16 years ago. So far, I’ve probably written and erased at least two books, since the main symptom of Parkinson’s is uncontrolled movement. But now I’m writing them again, in a different manner.
